Headlamp Doors
Just finished paint...having trouble with headlamp doors too far back & I have put one chip in the paint "small" but I know it's there can someone pipe in about adjustments they have made? thanx
1) The entire assembly can be moved fore and aft by loosening the 4 bolts that hold it in place. Two bolts are on the headlight support bar that goes accross the surround panel and two are further forward toward the bumper.
2) There are 3 bolts on each side on the pivot bearings that can be adjusted to move the rear of the door up and down relative to the headlight opening.
3) There are 2 adjustable collars that act as stops on the pivots for the headlight doors that can be adjusted for side-to-side adjustments.
4) Finally there is a stop screw on the actuation linkage that can be adjusted so that the front of the door can be adjusted flush with the forward section of the headlight door opening.
Hope this helps. BTW it's best to make sure the doors line-up before painting....but you know this now . Hope you can get everthing lined up and touched up OK.

Thanks...it's strange cause there was no issue with the paint before we did the car I guess the materials are a little thicker now than the original paint & materials...I guess the build up was just enough to make a difference...it's not a deep gouge but I know it's there & making me crazy! Thanks for the info it's perfect & should be no problem to work out.

I hope you don't mind if I add an additional question to this thread. But, the front edge of my headlights don't sit even from left to right with the body of the car. The outside front corner is above the body line, the inside front corner is below the body line. Where do I adjust the headlights to correct that?

Are the back corners level? Are both doors the same? If you have the back corners flush with one front corner high and the other front corner low, you may have to "tweak" the front end.

How is the back edge of the headlight door? If it is out of whack too, then I would adjust the pivot bearings on either side by moving one up and one down so the back edge is flush and parallel with the rear of the opening. This should bring the front edge so that it is parallel with the front of the opening but not necessarily flush. Then I would adjust the front stop bolt so that the door stops in the closed position with the front edge flush with the opening.
If the back edge is not out of whack, I think you may have other problems. Check that the pivot bearings are not worn (replacements are available) or that the headlight door or headlight assembly frame isn't bent. You could possibly compensate slightly by splitting the difference in "tilt" between the front and rear with the pivot bearings and then adjust the door up or down slightly so it looks less objectionable.
You may also be able to shim the front corner of the headlight frame so the corner of the entire assembly moves up or down.
Hope this helps. There's lots of adjustment available and it seems that adjusting one thing will often affect something else. It's a PIA but if things aren't bent or worn it CAN be done with patience.

The rear is level all the way across. It's just the front edge that has the problem. But both light are identical, low in the center, high on the outside.
I'll save these suggestions and see if I can't get some time in the garage this weekend. Thanks.
