Attempted to fire the motor again today and no luck. I did another spark check (no spark at all) and check compression on a couple (190 psi). I'm gonna take a break and get my Vette ready to race next Saturday. Just an update.

Let me ask a silly question.
I ask this because this happened to me when I bought my vette, and it is the reason the guy sold the car!

He hooked up the battery backwards

I found this out only after I put in a Mallory Dist.
My car would start and run with the points dist, but it would burn-up the alt wire as soon as some rpms came on, the alt would start putting out a charge.

Check your battery connections maybe you crossed them accidently.

Well, everything is not fine. There is just not that much to making an engine fire and at least run some. Something basic is being overlooked and we are all curious as to what isn't right here.

No one more so than me. I've always been able to diagnose and fix problems on my vehicles before but this one has me stumped...for now.

Crank your idle screw way up about 5 turns, pull number one plug crank over with your finger in the hole til you have comp blowing past your finger,ck where the rotor is line it up with number 1,run your wires clockwise, 18436572 mark number 1 on your cap for future reference.check for good spark and fuel in carb, it will fire.set timing and idle.Im sure you know all this but do it again it is easy to screw up.number 1 on drivers side front 1357 pass 2468

HEY,,,sorry but I forgot a few things,,, being that this has been going on for so long. Did you post that you have already replaced ignition parts with known good pieces, that is to say, take a part from a car that runs/starts etc. and also put the parts that are in this particular unit that WONT run/start and found that they do work in a different car/truck ? And was the final result the same,,,,,,,,,,,,,,no start/run ? You have everything you need to hear it start, maybe the ignition switch itself is bad, and not sending a signal to the dist. Its gotta be something so simple that we all are overlooking it. I found out long ago (by accident) that just because you twist a key and hear the starter turn over that doesnt neccessarily mean that it'll start/ run. Forgive me,, but it was on a Ford (found out that the key was actually going to far) . Again,,,, GOOD LUCK, Peace,,,Moosie

How about running a temporary 'hot' lead to the distributor and seeing if you get a spark. At this point, playing with spark plug wires and ignition will do nothing if there is no firing of the plugs.

My above post was to get you set up to fire, but you have to trace your faulty spark.Without spark nothing is going to fire. What Ignition do you have.

I would caution you to check for 12v or 9v depending on what year your car is. If you have the std points then you are not one with the full 12 v.

there is a length of resistor wire coming from your key switch. It is built into your wire harness and you must have it with the correct voltage to keep from burning up your points. (9v). It will look like any other wire but you must test it at the coil where you hooked it up. Also did you get it on the proper side of your coil? this is a easy thing to burn out and it shows no sign of damage till you test it.

Did I miss something?? Have we not had spark all along? Why did we tear motor apart?

We have to get spark, and there is nothing inside the motor that is going to get it for us. It's in the dist or wiring to it. Once we get it, we can work on getting it at the right time.

When I say "I checked that", believe me it's been multiple times. That's what's so frustrating.

I put the distributor from my Vette in it and there was no change. I didn't put the distributor from the truck in the Vette though. I get 12 volts at the distributor connection with the switch "on". During cranking it drops to @ 10.5volts. I mentioned that before and someone replied that was normal (10.5)

I have a coil-in-cap HEI, ACCEL 300+ box, ACCEL 300+ wires and ACCEL plugs. The same setup I have in my Vette. I've tried it with and without the box connected, same results. Sometimes I'll get spark and sometimes I don't. Right now I'm not getting any.

No points, coil-in-cap HEI. I'm getting 12 volts at the distributor connection with the switch "on".
