I am in the midst of installing a 200 4R overdrive transmission in my 72. What application dipstick/fill tube do I need? I have the body off right now and I understand that there were quite a few different tubes made over the years. What application has everyone found that fits the best?
When I did my swap I purchased a dipstick tube from the place I got the tranny from. (This was Bowtie Overdrives). What they send was a generic dipstick tube with instructions to cut the tube to different lengths depending on what tranny you purchased.
If I had known that I probably would have hit AutoZone and got it cheaper.
Don't use the BTO dipstick. It doesn't fit as well as it should because it's supposed to fit every auto trans GM ever made. If you decide to go universal fit, make sure you fit it to the trans before you put it in the car, otherwise it's a headache. Someone recommended the Lokar braided 200-4R dipstick, and it looks pretty trick so I'd say go with that.
I had a local transmission shop do it. They have done some work in the past for me and are very high quality. They just weren't sure what tube will clear the firewall and heater box, so I thought I would ask the panel of experts here on the forum...

let me know how u like it and how it performs when it's done. i also installed a 200r4 level 3 this summer.
My trans originally came out of a 84 Caddy and I used the original dipstick and it works just fine. Check at a salvage yard for one of these or check any mid 80's BOP with V-8 and 200R-4. Hershey
Did some footwork because I don't like the way the universal dipstick pokes out and stands out like a sour thumb. I think most universals will run about $30, and then you'll have to muscle it to fit. I'm thinking the Lokar firewall mount would be the best; flexible so you can route it any direction and a lot cleaner looking. The housing mount version might be too tucked away to reach easily. $60 at summit. If you really want the universal and can wait a few weeks, I may be pulling the universal from mine and replacing it with the braided.
