I just fixed mine yesterday on my '82, it was the wire harness connector on the back of the center cluster, it came loose so I pulled the cluster out and made sure all the contacts were straight, changed a couple burned out bulbs while I was in there, plugged the harness back in and put her all back together and everything works fine. Once you take out all the screws you gotta carefully turn and angle the cluster away from the dash. Disconnect the battery first or else you'll blow the gauges fuse. . .ask me how I know
Also don't forget the two screws that hold the center cluster to the console...they are underneath. You need to remove the side panels to get at them....ask me how I know....

Thanks Jim, I forgot to mention the 2 bottom screws.
here's a pic. you can slip your hand in from the passenger side up and feel your way up there and try to make sure the harness is plugged in. At least I could on my 79.
