Default Harmonic Balancer question

I developed a bad engine knock, got it home, checked and saw that the Harmonic Balancer is wobbling, the pullys are true. the sound is stomach turning. question is could it be the crank ? or did I get lucky and thats just the problem?

good oil good pressure no metal in pan

Sounds like the rubber ring has let go. If the center of the balancer is still true (pulleys still staright) and the outside ring is wobbling replace the balancer. Do it now before it comes apart.

I can't think of a way it could be the crank with the pullys remaining true.

do you think that would cause a loud knocking as opposed to vibration?

If the balancer has seperated from the rubber ring part, it will quickly destroy the bearings. If you have a loud knocking, it may be too late.

My balancer did the same thing. The outer ring was completely loose from the hub. The knocking sound is from the outer ring walking back and forth on the hub and hitting the oilpan.

That's the likely source of noise ... but if you continue to run it wobbly, it can beat the bearings out/ crack the crank itself.

If you dont have one, rent the tool for removing and reinstalling. It was a one afternoon job on mine.
