Well they sell them, I would think it might be smart to use them. Unless your real good with glass and can secure it without them.

Yes you need bonding strips, but you don't have to buy them, you can make them. All it is, is a strip of fiberglass put behind the panel gaps for support, that matches the contour of what you're working with. Just make sure you use the correct bonding adhesive. Bondo make a product called bondoglass, which is essentially the same thing.
