need advise. Just burned up the th 400 on the 71. Should have never changed that 10 year old fluid. The new motor I just dropped in this summer, should be about 350 HP, acording to my specs. What tranny should I go with. I have a B&M steet/strip in my 75 camaro. Should I go with TCI, JEGS, SUMMIT or some other builder? This is a sunny weekend cruiser no strip visits.
For 350 HP anyone can probably build a TH400 for you. Any reputable local transmission shop should be OK-no need to pay for all that truck shipping and you retain the original trans.
I saved my orignal engine, I know thats the way to go, but is the orignal
transmission worth saving? here in the northeast all these guys want to do is swap out trannies.
Keep the Turbo 400 and have it rebuilt. 350HP to a Turbo 400 is nothing. And as mentioned any reputable transmission shop can do the work for you since the Turbo 400 has been around for ages.
The only reason to swap trannys is to get an overdrive. The th400 is stronger than any of the newer overdrive trans on the market. Have it rebuilt and keep going.
There you have it with just a few people . Have the Turbo 400 rebuilt and smile. Unless you really want to have an overdrive go with the 4L80E which is a Turbo 400 with overdrive. The other transmissions are just gear boxes for a worn out Vega next to these. but that is just my .02

I think a 4L80E needs a computer, but the 200-4R is nearly the same fit as the TH400 and only needs the TV cable.
Like everyone said, unless you want OD, stick with the 400. I love OD, but it was a little pricey if you just want to get the car running.

I think that says it all. How many miles do you put on it in a year cruising on sunny weekends? An od tranny might pick up a couple of mpg, but the extra cost to have it would probably take over ten years to accrue.
