Default Temperture sensor

'78 .... engine change and smaller thread sensor has a different ohms reading than the origional so I know the gage will be wrong,
What have youse guys done to correct this? Have you been able to make one read right at various temp ranges by adding a resistor?

I took my head (aluminum) in Monday to the machine shop, had the hole drilled larger and re-tapped. Got it back Tuesday and only hurt $30 worth. Or you could go to the hardware store and buy a couple of adapters to make the original sensor work.

I put my sensor in the thermostat housing. It works fine. I have heard of people making adapters to put the larger sender in the heads and in the intake manifolds as well.

I wonder how accurate your temp is... By mounting the sender here are you not measuring the coolant temp coming into the engine, which will be cooler than the actual engine temp?

I have a 93 chevy truck with a 355 and sportsman II heads. I had a problem with the hole being a different size over the stock heads. I went to different auto parts and hardware stores but the only place that had what I needed was Van's auto parts. I found a coupling to make it work. I don't like it too well as it sits really close to my headers.

I had an original style sender turned down and threaded. There is enough material there to turn it down. Worked well for me.

I used a 1/2 to 3/8 adapter from an autoparts store with the stock style sensor. Works fine, clears the headers easy. But I have aftermarket heads, your hole might be drilled in a different location but I doubt it. It can't hurt more than a few bucks to try.

Yes, you can correct your readings by adding the appropriate resistor....use the old one for reference, put both the new one and the old one in hot water and add resistance to the new one until the ohms match the reference one. (Resistors available at Radio Shack). I did this to get correct readings on my '69. Since then, I found out Clocks by Roger has the correct sensors for early Corvettes and I bought a new one from him. You may want to check him out.
