Anyone know of rebuild kits for the factory shifters or is it just best to spend the $$$ on a Hurst Comp. Plus with the 'look-a-like' lever?
All the major Corvette parts suppliers sell a shifter rebuild kit. The stock shifter works OK, but if you want to do some heavy duty shifting, buy the Hurst.
Have a leaky output shaft seal and was told you have to pull the tranny to change this! True??? Thought while it was out, rebuild or change out the shifter. Thanks.
On the shifter never understood the concept of a hurst shifter, never used one but there isn't a lot about these shifters. I just don't see the advantage.
i was having problems with the shifter on my saganaw and wanted to rebuild the shifter too. i searched all over town with no luck. i was told the only thing i could do was but an all new shifter. with the cash i didnt have. i ended up taking the parts from several shifters to make one. surprisingly it works perfectly!

The hurst shifter connects directly to the gearbox just like midyear corvette did. The hurst is tighter and has springs which aid in upchanges. The result is a shifter that will allow for smooth upshifts without missing gears. The hurst will not miss a gear when doing power shifts. A stocK C3 shifter will rotate as the engine torques the gearbox away from the shifter which is bolted to the frame.
The only downside of a hurst over stock is that the gearstick has more vibration. I have one and love it. I would never go back to a stock shifter now. If you price a rebuild kit it is about $130 more to go with a Hurst.
Thanks to all who are jumping in here. Have had Hursts' in the past and know well how much nicer they are over stock. It's been brought up about 'failures' with sloppy stockers and was wondering the price diff. in rebuilding and a Hurst. Thanks Pete. Not that much to save for. Now, how big a pain in the a$$ to change IN the car?
volunteer Vette sells all of the bits and pieces that are in the stock C3 Muncie trans shifter. They also sell new sifters as a complete assembly.
I disassembled by shifter out of my relatively low mileage 68. The shifter was covered with a big ball of sandy black grease. I was surprised as to how much wear the sand had caused.
It seems that everyone posting threads about the shifter has good things to say about the Hurst. I think you can now buy Hurst 4 speed shifters with the stock C3 gear shift lever, so you will still have a stock appearance inside the car.

Not a problem to change in the car. Make VERY sure all the silly looking clips that hold the arms on to the shifter and transmission are installed properly.
