Default Modding the 700 R4

I need to change the springs and/ or weights on the governor to lower the WOT shift point, it currently shifts at ~5500. I ordered a set of springs and weights but the parts came with no instructions and I have not been able to find a diagram, it's not in the shop manual. I think the governor cover is on the left side of the tranny near the back. If it's what I think it is it looks like a small metal dome. Not a lot of room to work. I this the governor? Do I need to take off the crossmember to remove it. How do I change the weights??

Your advice is appreciated

I am really interested in this as well. I was at the drag strip this past Saturday, and kept hitting the rev limiter on the 2-3 shift. It's driving me nuts. Only way I got through the day was getting on & off the throttle real quick, to force an upshift. BTW, I think you're in the right spot, I just don't know the procedure either.

Been there done that, I found the easiest way to get to the gov in my 700 was to cut out a panel in the floorboard, and use sheetmetal edge and screw/seal it back in place when you have got all your work done....make an access panel....

the .gov comes out when the large spring clip is released from the cup, then the cup has a o ring on it so a screwdriver prys it outta there, then the .gov itself slides right out...

if the shift is too late, check for the simplest thing, that the throttle body is in fact wide open against the stops, so the tranny kickdown cable is not restricting it's opening...that should be proper kickcable adjustment....so then i'ts into the .gov.....

the weights would have to be heavier, for shorter shifts, MINE was made much lighter....I still don't understand why that WOT shift would ever vary, ever....but for some silly reason it's an issue on these 700 installs....

Gene,

Thanks for the info. My TV cable is working fine. I can adjust my shift points with the TV cable but it's not good for the tranny.

I long for the good old days when you could adjust the kick down with a mechanical linkage.

Did you try removing the cossmember to get to the governor?

Thanks!

FYI,

I called

http://www.racetransmissions.com/mai...tomer_service/

Tech support and this is the scoop: You do need to remove the crossmember to get to the governor cap. The cap prys off with a screwdriver and the governor pulls strait out spinning 1/2 turn counterclockwise. The springs are supposed to be easy to change. After changing the springs and/ or weights, you slide back in the governor, it will spin 1/2 turn clockwise, clean up the cap, seal with slicone and tap back on with a hammer and block of wood. Then you go test and possibly do it all over again.
