Default Which Vortec Heads?

Planning on refreshing the 327 next year when I put in the TKO-600. FAUXRS2 is helping me with all the specs for the build process. I had planned on using the stock 291X (2.02) hump heads after some massaging but for the same money as the head work I can get a set of Vortecs that will constantly outflow the hump heads. There are several on the market and I need some input. Schneider did the cam for FAUXRS2. I don't have the cam specs yet but it's got 410 lift with much shorter lobe separation.

Anyway here are some Vortecs.

I've done a bit of research on the Vortecs, because I am switching to them as well. If you are buying them stock, then what you want to look for is either the 906 or 062 castings. Stock, they are 170cc with 1.94/1.50 valves. Max lift is about .475". If you use them with the stock setup, you'll need self-aligning rockers. The ones you linked have screw-in studs and guideplates, so you would use standard rocker arms. The ones you linked are aluminum, and the stock heads would be cast iron. Also, don't forget you'll need a Vortec intake manifold and center-bolt valve covers.

They accept both center bolt and side bolt valve covers.

Well, okay the ones you linked do, but stock ones don't.

Those are aftermarket and not GM vortecs.

They are probably superflowheads or some other thing.

The new GM bowtie vortecs are iron and have 2.00, and 1.55 valves. In either a 170cc or 200cc head.

I clicked on the Ebay link before reading any of the other posts. GMPP makes cast iron Vortec heads and the aluminum Fast Burn heads. The Ebay seller is not selling either of these. I dislike the fact that the seller does not mention who the manufacture is.

The stock/regular GMPP Vortec heads only use centerbolt valve covers and a Vortec intake is required. From what I gathered, it's not the bolt pattern that makes a vortec intake a necessity but the matching of the runners. You can buy adapters to convert from centerbolt to perimeter style valve covers; however, a new set of valve covers would be cheaper.

The newer style Bowtie Vortec different. Allow for the older type valve covers, higher lift, a thicker deck, and other things. The downside is that they are no longer a 'value' type of head.

If you're looking for a good package go to Pace Performance and look at part number PAC-2116. This is a complete package with all gaskets, Self aligning rockers and a Edelbrock Intake for $872.95. When I bought it two years ago it was $795. The heads are GM Casting #
12558060 and are good for a .480 lift cam. I can only speak for myself when I say this kit along with a new cam and true duals (no cat) and Hooker Headers really woke up my engine. They truely do flow very well and will surprise you. In my opinion they are the best bang for your buck.

Their 1.94's but with the modified combustion chamber and fast burn technology they flow just as good as 2.02's. They say they are 20 to 40 HP gains. I would say they are closer to 40HP. I bought a GM cam with .460 lift to go with them for another $89.00. Topped it off with a 670CFM Holley Street Avenger Carb and I'm proud to say it's a screamer now. A far cry from the 185HP from the factory. Check out my Pics'. I'm now running a Mallory HEI instead of the Accel.
