Default blue smoke

my 71BB has started blowing blue smoke a lil, b4 it gets too bad what's the likely culprit. i put a new PCV valve on it and it didn't make a noticeable difference... i'm thinkin valve seals since the top end is original on this 104,000 mile engine...is this a diy project or should i take it to a shop. i've never done interal work on an engine but willing to try with my mechanical ability.

A puff of blue smoke at startup only indicates bad valve seals. Oil leaks down into the cylinders and gets burned on startup. Blue smoke on acceleration or deceleration is indicative of something internal and more involved. I'd pull my plugs and see if they are covered with oil. You can also do a compression test to see what it shows.

Before you go digging into the seals check your intake manifold bolts first, especially if you replaced the intake recently. I had the same symptom on my 327 but luckily I found the intake bolts were loose and tightened them using the correct torque sequence. Had to do that a couple of times but it did the job and the smoking stopped. Might also check for shot intake gaskets if the bolt tightening doesn't correct it.

Good Luck

I replaced the intake gaskets...twice...didnt do any good. Next I tried Viton valve seals (replaced teflons). That did the trick for me.
