I've got a clunking sound that is wheel speed related on the left rear wheel. It started out only when the brakes were applied, and then I could make it go away if you pushed the brake pedal harder. Now it has started not nearly as noticeable but it makes a little noise without the brakes being applied. It still goes away with a fairly hard brake application. I've pulled the wheel and don't see anything obviously loose involving the caliper. On a side note, the parking brake doesnt' work, so I'm wondering if something might be going on with the P-Brake inside the drum. Any ideas?
Thanks
Pete
I had the emergency brake fall apart in my '70. It will make a noise from time to time. Don't be surprised if it is wheel bearings though. I did this job once, I don't want to do it again.
Pauvil, how do you check the u joints? do you just turn them back and forth and look for excessive play? BTW, it has a new spindle so I HOPE the previous owner put a new bearing on it at the same time.
Ok, I got both rear wheels off tonite and didn't visually see anything. The one thing I did notice is that you can push on the top of the brake caliper on the LR wheel, and the whole trailing arm and the whole assembly will move about 1/2" back and forth. Also the LR wheel hangs down where the top of the wheel is out further than the bottom. On the RR wheel, the trailing arm assembly is solid as a rock and the wheel hangs straight up and down. Anyone think I'm on to something?
