I mean, I know the whole shebang can seize but I'm wondering if it's possible for the differential to fail in such a way that both wheels are locked into turning at the same rate.
I've noticed that as I turn (especially at low speeds) I get a lot of tire squeal. Also, when wet it has been extra... scary.
Get one of these then drive the car in slow, tight figure 8's in an empty concrete parking lot. Hopefully this will force some new lubricant into the clutches and get them to function properly. This is for '68 to '79 cars.
I run two bottle of additive in mine. Never had a problem. If the rear is setup to tight you can also get this popping sound. This will usually happen on a new rear though. Try the fluid first. If not your posi might have to be rebuilt.
If it's like the differential I opened the other day it could. This is the worse looking diff I worked on. I don't think the oil was changed since it left St Louis in '69! Everything inside, including the posi clutches, was coverd in black coating like powder coating. I spent about 6 hours cleaning this disgusting POS, but it's much better now
Stay tuned for future pic's of this messy AZZ end job!
Hmm... that's not encouraging. The oil that came out of this thing last summer was a black, near-tar material. I just figured that's what old gear oil looked like.
