My winter project is a BB for my '75. Couple of questions: Can I stroke a 454 block with a deck height of 9.80? If so, what rods, pistons? Do the pistons have 'short' tops to compensate for the increased stroke? Can I use a block with 10.2 inch deck height? (I have power brakes). If I stroke it, what rods, pistons?

I'm looking at doing this. I have a short deck 454 (9.8" deck height) and plan to use a 4.25" stroke crank. With a 0.060" bore this will work out to 496 cubes. Speed pro makes some hypereutectic pistons that will work with this stroke and stock rods and will not require any special mods. This is the route I took for a moderate HP, torquey street motor. Also, JE makes a bunch of big block pistons that will work with many combinations of strokes and conn-rod lengths. All of their pistons are forged and pricey but if you want to play, you're gonna have to pay.

Mine is an Eagle cast steel crank. I bought it new from someone on Ebay that lost interest in his project, but Summit racing sells them for a reasonable price. Depending on how serious you are there are forged cranks available at 4.25" as well but for much more $$$.
