Should my 1980 have an electric fan?
I bought a manual a few weeks ago and was reading it. Came to the section about electric fan wiring-and could not picture this in my head. Went out to look at my car and I do not have one. The manual does ot mention anything about this being related to an option package. I do have A/C and is still working. Should I install one?
I believe all 1980 'vettes have the auxiliary cooling fan. It is in front of the belt-driven fan, bolted to the fan shroud. It is controlled by a switch in the right cylinder head, and comes on at 238 degrees. G/L
I've been owned by a 1980 for 10 years. It was bone stock when I got it. Mine was an L48 with a 4 speed and A/C. Mine did not have an auxilary electric cooling fan.
I got out my shop manual, and after looking though all the sections and schematics I was unable to find reference to an auxilary electric cooling fan. However, after looking at the assembly manual, it appears that 1980 L82 models had an auxilary fan cooling wire assembly that was part of the radiator fan shroud on the passenger side.
Mine has been converted to Flex-A-Lite twin electric fans and my orignal belt driven fan is gone as is my radiator fan shroud. Mine didn't seem to need an auxilary fan when it was in it's stock configuration. It doesn't need one now
Is this fan required to keep the engine cool. Have you heard of anyone taking their off and not having problems on hot days?

The fan is for cooling in extended idling conditions with the a/c on. The wiring diagrams are in the shop manual page 8A-78. No reference is made to useage. It is centrally positioned within the shroud. Brandywine is correct, it appears to be used on the L-82 in 1980, and was standard in all 1981's.
First used in 1979, the auxiliary electric fan was installed ONLY on L82/air conditioned Vettes. Included the trap door in the lower shroud. I believe 80s were the same setup. If you look in some of the parts catalogs(Ecklers, Corv Am., etc) you will find the trap door shroud listed as for "spec. hi. perf." for 79/80. The wiring hookup at the fuse box actually looks kinda afterthought as the wire comes off the front of the panel. As stated above, standard in 81.
