Default Muncie 4 speed side cover Question???

How do you get the side cover back on? Does it need to be in a certain gear or what?
Thanks

I rebult mine several times, but that was years ago. I never remember having any problems with the side cover, just make sure the shift forks are lined up correctly and it should fit.

I just resealed the M21 this past summer. Gear selector hubs and forks were all in neutral then I lined up the forks to hubs and just wiggled the side cover on to the case. It was pretty easy so yes, make sure everything is lined up and the fork shafts are in the cover all the way.

I rebuilt mine about a year ago. As I recall it works best if the tranny is in second gear. Otherwise the shift fork hits the case. I believe moving the front slider towards the back puts the tranny in second. However I'm 53 and have had a couple of shots already tonight so somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

I read the manual after I had mine apart too. shifter should be in second before removing the cover.

First right answer on the thread: Give that man a CIGAR! 2nd gear needs to be engaged to allow the sidecover to be reinstalled without a fight.

Ahem! I believe if you review the thread you will see that it was I who was the first with the right answer. However I'm not a cigar smoker so light 'er up Jughead.

Default How about the reason???

Although it was answered correctly, the reason the transmision must be in 2nd gear is to allow the 1-2 fork ( and all forks) to remain in the side cover and CLEAR the reverse idler boss in the main case.

Thanks for the input, Paul. I used your video when I rebuilt my M-20. I would highly recommend it to anyone with a Muncie whether you're planning to rebuild it yourself or not. I bought a couple of the "How to Rebuild a Muncie" sheets on Ebay; they were nowhere as useful as the video.
