I've got the "new" 454 torn down, and the bores look great at .030 over. Everything was clean, no gunk, and looks to be no wear at all. It had low compression cast pistons.
My question now is: I'm considering TRW pistons with Brodix aluminum heads, and was wondering about this combination for my street driven BB.
TRW-L2465F30 25.7cc dome pistons with Brodix Race Rite aluminum heads with 115cc chambers, which calculate to approximately 10.4 compression. (Cam = CC 274XE or CC LS6-H nostalgia)(This will go in a 4-speed '68 vette, 3.70 gears, weekend driver never raced)
Any unseen issues with these components, will they work OK together?
I am planning nearly the identical engine right now also. For the extra $200 -$300 a set, I would go with either SRP or Ross pistons (also includes pins and locks). SRPs are 23cc and the Ross are 20cc. They're probably a lot lighter than the TRWs also.
I do know that with the .240" domes if you run around .520" lift you'll be shaving pistons, I went with the .100" domes, 119cc heads and .520" lift with no problems. Engine still makes very nice power and torque and is very pumped gas friendly. And always use a good set of valve springs, when you starting getting close, one missed shift will kill you.
