Default Drive Axle U Joint Diagnosis

My brothers '76 just got back on the road and we noticed a rather loud clunking noise behind the drivers seat. Sounds like the drive axle u joint is bad.

I raised up the rear and slightly rotated the tire/wheel to look for play and noticed some.

My question is, how hard is it to replace these u joints? Does anyone have some good instructions or is it straight forward. Do we replace both sides at the same time?

Thanks,
Dino

Are you sure it's a u-joint and not the front rubber bushing for the differential? If it is worn out it will clunk when you start forward, backward or when shifting. Hope this helps.

Check end play at the half shaft yolks.
