Default Q-jet rebuild, Lars??

Well I did the rebuild, it went OK, well.... When I got the carb on and cranked it I noticed the gasket for the body got wet. Float level right?? Took it back off and set the float lower, put it back and it still seams wet although the needle is seating before it overflows because with the carb full it would not drain back out. Anyway I fired the car up, still have that rough as hell idle with low vac, about 14 and if I cover the top of the carb the engine pics up like a vac leak. I read Lars' papers and it's sounding like my primary metering rods are not being sucked in. No black smoke at idle but it is stinky. Anything above idle seems fine, normal, smooth. Any thoughts??

I just went thru my Qjet yesterday also. Here are a few things to check. Is the rear manifold vacuum port hooked up or plugged. I forgot to re-install the plug in mine and it ran but very rough. Check that the gasket between the air horn and body is not hanging up the primary metering rods. you should be able to push them down and they should come up smoothly on their own. What about the mixture screws? Are they backed out too far creating an overly rich condition at idle? I set mine all the way in (gently) and back them out 3 turns or so to start. Just some ideas....

Yes all vac lines are good, my screws are out 1-1/2 turns, the rods I'll check.
Thanks!

2-1/2 turns?? that seams like a lot, just because it smells rich, the pipes aren't getting black though.

Have you adjusted your primary piston lower stop? Accidently bend your primary rod hanger? Did you change the primary rods because they are not all compatible...

No, I didn't bend or change anything, Lars says my mixture screws should be at base 4 turns, I'll try that later as well as check the primary metering rods.
