I have installed a different distributor in the 383 and now when started, the tach is irratic and not accurate in comparison to the original distributor. At times it will be off by more than a 1000 RPMs.
The distributor appears to be stock with new plugs, 8.8 wires, HEI cap, rotor and curve kit with medium springs.
Did I forget to install something on the distributor?
It's silver and looks like a condensor. Should be mounted on your intake in the rear and hooks to the Dist with a tan wire. This might be the problem it was with my 80. www.rodneydickman.com has them $29.00

knowing the year of the car would help. Have you checked the tach cable for kinking or have you lubed it?

You are correct!! There are one of these on the intake of the original engine and I did not transfer it over!
I will do this and see how it works!
