I asked this question as a reply to a thread a few days ago, but I think it got buried. I have an '80 with a 383 and a pretty strong cam. In normal driving, the temp needle is right at 200. There are some long hills where I live, and when climbing the temp rises a little (needle goes to first "0" in "200" and I get a mild engine knock. Sounds like shaking small gravel in a tin can.Seems like a little loss in power.
One mechanic has suggested carb is too lean. Richer = cooler.I read some place, however, that a problem with knock might be because it's already too rich and carbon is causing the knock. Then there's the possibility it's the timing.
If you suspect a carbon buildup problem you could run some Sea foam through the fuel system. No vette should have that problem though.
What octane are you running?
Just making sure you weren't running 87 if it's timed for 91 or so. Just loosen the bolt that holds the distributor and turn it clockwise a few degrees, retighten the bolt and test drive it.
Why not try a tank of 93 oct and see if things improve..gas is cheaper now...at least you won't be re-inventing the wheel that way, ya might just need a little more punch...easy
