What is the best method of separating the forward exhaust pipes from the rear pipes on under car exhaust? I don't want to destroy the pipes so is an air hammer with a blunt tip too aggressive?
I am about to remove my transmission and want to get the exhaust out of my way. I am sure I can do it with it just disconnected but if I separate the pipes that go through the cross member then I'll have a lot more room.
Suggestion or tried and true methods please!
Thanks
Heat Heat and more Heat. Once you get it real hot glowing if needed you will just have to wiggle and work to get them apart. I put anti seize on the pipes so they come apart easier later. I have had mine apart many times now.

I agree, I did mine with a friend. One guy heats the joint while the other twists the muffler/tailpipe assembly and pulls at the same time. They came right apart, then removed the tailpipe muffler assembly. Mine were rusted together pretty good too. We used a pipe spreader to expand the tailpipe and put some antiseize on the pipe when we put it back together.
