I have been thinking about purchasing a C6 and was lurking on their forum and noticed a thread about oil consumption. I would have inquired there but dedided it might get me hung, shot, or worse. They said GM says 1 quart every 2,000 is normal. If my BB427 used that much oil I would be considering a rebuild.
Is this something specific to the c6 and is it "normal"?
Liability. That's my guess. Odds are that the C6 won't consume that much oil, but if it does, they don't want to be held responsible for replacing the engine.
Uh uh...no way....you don't get out that easy Mr!! Let's get that C-3 going! That's cheating just to get a car going for the Forum Cruise In. We'd have to make you park in the "other" lot!
And c'mon..you wish the 427 only used a qt every 200 miles!!
But seriously Daddy...let's don't get just "any C-6"..we want a Z06!!!! THEN we'll think it's cool!

The manufactures have a limit of how much oil is being used before they will do a warranty claim. Many years ago, I thought it was 1 qt for 500 miles. Different engines may have different amounts. What is normal and what they allow are two different things.
When I was a service manager at a Chevrolet dealership in the late 70s, I couldn't touch an engine until I had documented proof of consumption exceeding 1 quart per 800 miles. By documented we had to be the one checking and adding the oil. That said, we've all seen engines that would only consume 1 at every 3,000 miles. What's normal? It just depends. Today's engine assembly techniques are pretty incredible, and 2,000 to 3,000 miles per quart would be my expectations. Properly broken in, that is. Would I have a new Z06 pulled down for consumption of 1 at every 1,500 miles? I don't know. I'd have to think really hard about that.
