Quick question......Does the Turbo 350 torque converter have a drain plug? (1980)
I haven't gotten under there to look yet.
Not from the factory, but somebody may have installed one in the years since it was built.
If you take it to a tranny shop with the right equipment, they can flush that system very, very thoroughly, much better than you can do by merely dumping all of the fluid out of the pan + draining the converter (assuming it has a drain plug in it).
I won't recommend putting a drain plug in the converter unless you are intimately familiar with the inner workings of the converter. Drill it in the wrong spot and you will cause yourself big trouble. It is a lock-up unit and so there are certain areas that will not tolerate a hole in them! There is also the chance of contaminating the whole system with chips.
Unless they are subjected to extreme heat, automatic trannies should have their atf changed every 25 or 30 thousand miles.
My 1980 shop manual describes a vacuum actuated electrical switch that is supposed to lock up the converter under a number of specific conditions. I have this switch on my car but I don't know if it is working properly.
