Default weather stripping question

I just installed new weather stripping on my freshly painted doors and have to slam them pretty hard to get them to shut. Is this common because of the newness of the weather stripping or have I done something wrong? Thanks for any help.

I replaced the stripping on my T-tops a while back and had the same problem..I couldn't get the top in far enough for the pin to able to lock. Once it conformed to it's new found shape it was fine. Beware though, the stripping will adapt to the new shape and stay that way...if it's twisted or misaligned while closing the doors it's likely it will be that way for good.

So, how has the new weatherstripping been working? My panels start leaking in a heavy rain and I'm planning the same repair. Where did you get your replacement pieces?

From what I've read on the Forum it takes a while for the rubber to form and the doors will close easier over time. What weather stripping did you go with? Does it seem like good quality? I'm looking to do the same.

Gotta do the seals on the T-tops on my 76 as well...does anyone know if the seals are glued on or if it rides in a track of some sort...Year-One sells a weatherstripping removal spray and just curious what that would be for??

New seals need time to take a set. It will happen sooner in warmer weather. I would keep all the panels closed for a few days or maybe a week. After that you should see a difference.

The seals are glued and also have plastic tabs that push into the top. Use 3M contact adhesive after cleaning all the residue off from the old ones. I didn't need the adhesive removal stuff, a little alcohol solvent used carefully removed what was left.

I bought mine from Corvette Rubber last year.

Mine are still very firm after 2 years. Doors shut good, but you have to close harder than without weatherstrip. Door panel was dragging a bit too. That makes a difference.

They came with the car when I bought it but I'll see if I can dig up the receipt...I know it wasn't from Eckler's or Corvette America, but a weatherstripping/trim specialty shop (A strip joint?)

I haven't had any leaks (from the tops ) since I replaced it.

Good luck

I was just shopping for T-top replacement rubber:

http://www.ecklers.com/product.asp?p...&dept%5Fid=253

I really only need the driver's side but I suppose doing both of them together would be wise.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how hard is this project? (10 being hardest).

I just replaced the door and window frame gaskets, and had a problem with closing the door. I got some silicone spray and sprayed on both gasket surfaces. Doors closed great afterwards. Just keep the overspray off the paint.

If all the necessary vertical and horizontal adjustments have been made to the door glass for proper fitment... Park the car in a WARM sunny place, then open the doors, roll the windows up, close the doors. If everything is sealed correctly(including the T-Tops) you should be good to go after a few days.
