Does no one know how to replace the window regulator gear?!

Does no one know how to replace the window regulator gear?!

I want to replace the regulator gear of my 78 drivers side power window. And I don't want to use the gear repair kit.

I've been holding off on an order for over a week now looking for an answer. What do I need to do this? Do I need a new rivet or any special tools? Has anyone else done this before?

you can use small bolts and nuts in lieu of the rivets...unless you want to use rivets, you will have to pay big bucks for a rivet gun that uses the larger rivets.

Thanks GDaina, and can I re-use the 'rivet' that sits in the center of the spring, holding it in place?

If the large spring is rusted, now might be a good time to replace it. Mine broke on me, and required me to remove the regulator assembly. Not really a PITA, but if you're already in there, might as well do it. As for the rivets, I'd use nuts and bolts as suggested above.

This is the 'rivet' that I was talking about. Does it need to be replaced when installing a new gear?

I would say yes, it needs replaced, since I can't think of a way to remove the rivet without killing it. On the other hand, I wasn't sure how to get the new one peened in correctly, so I didn't do anything on mine... yet.

Nah...no need to replace that part unless yours is broken. I replaced my regulator springs. You need to take the entire assembly out to do it.

The current issue of Corvette Fever (or was it last months?) has an article on how to replace/renew the regulators. Also how to change the hardware associated with the window. The article is probably available at their website. Lots of pictures.
