I have the original '79 shifter out of the car - the tranny is getting rebuilt - how can I tell if the shifter is worn or not. When I could drive the car it was occasionally stubborn to shift...

Why not go new throughout and put on a Hurst Comp+ shifter? You will love it!

I bought one for my 77 Nova and Muncie close ratio, and this shifter is awesome. You get nice, tight, positive shifts. I believe you have to buy the linkages and the shifter separately.
When you say buy the shifter, are you talking about the Hurst shifter handle not including all of the linkages?? I saw one that looks like the original Corvette shifter- which is what I want . Isn't this around $300 total for all of this?

that comes with the linkages and all the little pieces but does not have the shifter handle. This sounds like what I want because I want to have the look of the stock shift handle (use my old one) with the mechanism (guts) of something better than stock- this one.
$89 also sounds better than $300 for the whole shebang...
Does this sound like the right part that I need then?
I replaced the worn out shifter on my 1980 with a Hurst. It looks exactly like the original shifter including the T-handle for reverse. The only difference between the original and the Hurst is you don't have to pull up on the T-handle to get the tranny into reverse. You can...but a nice slap to the left, and you can feel it going through the gate.
The reverse "tail" on my original shifter was almost completely worn down. Another few months and the car could have gotten stuck in reverse, or I couldn't have gotten it into reverse... Since my parking brake has never been something to write home about, this could have been a very interesting scenario if I'd have had to get under the car and mess with the linkage
The Hurst part number for 69-79 complete installation kit which includes the shifter and the installation kit is 291-8487.
Good luck!

thanks..I can see now that the handle and the installation kit are different items. Is it possible to make use of my original shifter handle and use it on the Hurst installation kit?

Stock appearing handle for the Hurst is available from various Corvette parts vendors.
Jeez I don't remember having to buy the shifter and installation kit separately when I put my Hurst in back in '99. Seems like a way to just get extra money out of us now. FWIW I love my Hurst shifter.
