I just purchased a high torque Mini-Starter for my 69 SB, replacing the original factory starter. The rear starter bracket will not work with this new starter. The body length of the new starter is at least 3 inches shorter than the original. The people I bought the starter from (DB Electrical) do not offer a rear bracket. I understand that if I do not use this bracket, then the starter can "****" sideways and cause grinding issues with the ring gear on the flywheel. Anybody know where I can get a bracket or am I going to have to fabricate one?
I installed a high torque mini starter on a ZZ4 in my 69 and did not use any rear bracket. So far no problems, I think that bracket is used because the original starter is so heavy but I'm not sure.
I use a hi torque mini starter (PowerMaster XS Torque) on my '69 SB....in 4 years so far I've had no problems with it "cocking", and do not use a rear bracket. This starter is less than 1/2 the weight (only 8.5 lbs.) of the original, and is fully secure using the 2 attachment bolts.
