Default Speedometer no worketh (not a broken cable)

So I get tired of trying to yank the damn cable out from behind the speedometer and decide I'll try and yank it from behind the firewall, while someone pushes the retainer clip in. Well I pop the hood and see a little gizmo where the cable from the transmission (which I already unhooked) goes in to and then another cables goes out to the firewall. So I unhook both cables and spin em and see that they both spin on both ends. I then spin the one that goes behind the firewall and see my needle move. I grab a drill and spin that with the cable and speedometer needle moves perfectly. So apparently it looks to be the cruise control module. I would just route a long cable from the tranny to the speedo but that involves more work than it's worth, in my opinion. So how much is this lil module probably going to set me back? Or should I attempt to yank and rebuild it?

You are right, that is the cruise control servo or transducer if I remember correctly.

Evil, gotta figure out which part it is. I need pictures haha

Edit: Just looked on midamerica. It's the transducer, $100 for a rebuilt one.

Edit 2: Looking around some more, $55 from kragen. Still there must be a cheaper way to get the speedo working again!

Did this to mine this last summer. $100 and its done deal from MAD. Works great and replaced the speedo cables while I was at it. Speedo works and is very smooth.

You could get a longer speedo cable and just replace the entire run. It will save you some cost but give you greater PITA factor trying to make the turn into the firewall and reconnecting to the speedo.

I chose the minor increase in cost for the ease factor of installation.

Brent....

$100 for a part that probably originally cost GM $20 really isn't justified, in my opinion. Found one for $50 on ebay from a reputable seller. $8 for shipping, no sales tax, so I might go with that. For now I've disconnected the cable from the trans to the transducer, to save my drive gear. I don't really want to try and pry that damn cable from behind the speedo again, that thing is a PITA and a half. I may splurge and get the one from Kragen for $70 with the lifetime warranty, if I feel up to it. I'll do brake pads at that time, too. Need to find a good price on some KYB Gas-a-justs, too. Hopefully I get some good gigs at the end of this month, so I can pay for all the things that need be done. Hoping to get a keisler 5 speed by the end of summer. That'd rawk.

You can get the transducer at almost any parts store for a lot less than the vette catalogs.......................LT
