Whistling Trans
For the past 6 months there was a whistling sound from under the center of the car when I put it in reverse at idle. Today it started doing it in drive. Goes away in neutral or park. I assume I should check the modulator or line or are there any vacuum components inside the trans? Don't know which trans it is. Car is an '81 with a new motor but the trans is probably original.

I had a similar problem on my '78, when I would accelerate I would hear a whistle that seemed to be coming from the trans, I checked the trans line to the modulator and everything was good, I had my son help me out to pinpoint the noise and where it was really coming from...It ended up being a busted motor mount, with the torque of the motor, it was jumping from drivers side and the fan was hitting the shroud, which made a whistling sound.. Not sure if this could be your problem. With your hood open, put car in drive and hold on brake while lightly pressing on gas, check to see if motor is jumping...

I'd check for pinched cooling lines or whatever those "modulator" lines (???) are....not into automatics,but something may be kinked causing a restriction...might be a vacuum line,too...
