While crusing North on I-15 on a sunny Calif day well above the posted limit my speedo on the ole 78 SA went T*t$ up. I know the 78 year has 2 cables a short going to the speedo and a longer cable going to the tranny. Any experiance as to maybe which one may have went bad before I make a parts purchase. Are there any tech tips to check which one my be bad? Thanks in advance.

While I don't know 78s I believe that the cables connect at the speedo cruise control under your hood, don't they? You can pull the cable out of the sleeve very easily and see which one failed. replacement is very simple once you have cleaned the sleeve and lubed up the replacement cable.
