Can a block be repaired if it has a crack. It got cold here and I only had water in it. There is about a 3 inch crack in the block under the head on one side- the side I didn't let the water out of.

you need to pull the intake manifold and see how many cracks are in the oil valley.....On my cracked block there were three times as many cracks there as what was visible on the outside.

NO. They are not actually frost plugs. The holes are required during the casting process in order to keep the sand cores for the water jacket located correctly. The plugs are merely there to keep water in the water jacket not pop when the block freezes.
Sorry about your luck but if its cracked in one place there will be more, find a new block. Remember to run antifreeze or store in a climate controlled garage.
Anti freeze should always be run in a 50/50 mix for keeping you from overheating as well in the summertime. The boiling point of water mixed with anti freeze is higher. Look at your antifreeze charts for the facts.
There is room in the top of a radiator for expansion. if you have air pockets in a block, you're asking for trouble - and I have seen frozen/broken radiators.
I'm surprised it didn't pop one of the frost plugs first.
That was my first thought...I'd junk it and get a new crate-er..you'll never find all the cracks if it's that bad..in New York we use "anti-freeze"...I know, quite the concept...UH?
Just wondering how they ever got to be known as "freeze plugs", maybe bubba got lucky one winter and one pushed out when his block froze and he then named 'em freeze plugs,,, any thoughts? Peace,,,Moosie
