Finally found some time to pull the engine of my '68. My main bearings are spun.. Checked out the upper part of one of the bearings and it looked pretty bad... Here are pics of the pulled engine and one of the main bearings:
Here are the pics of the bearing:
Some time this week, I'll drop off the engine for a rebuild.. I'll maybe have some more porting work done too...
BEEE JEBUS man you seriously have some GREAT luck there....
why in hell that engine came out in one piece is a total mystery to everyone on this forum, I"m sure.....
well, better than a bunch of junk....at least you don't need spend 50 bazillion bux to replace the thing....
GENE
Except the bearings, I should be able to re-use all engine components.. The rings sealed perfect until the end.. Pulled the plugs and all of them are in perfect condition with no oil.. Therefore, the rebuild should mostly be $$ for machine work and assembly labor.. Well, I'll have to see if I'll need a new crank or if it can be turned and re-used..
Now the thing is to find out why it spun in the first place. Something was not setup correctly. You should get far more life out of it than what you did. I don't care if you were getting detonation something else looks wrong. I would make real sure that all the clearances are setup properly. You don't want to be doing this every 60 or so passes. Now is a good time to upgrade a little. Good luck with it.
Well, lets find out WHY the bearing spun. Some causes are: Not enough clearance. Not enough bearing crush. Too large a radius on crank and not enough champher on bearing. Here is a good read...

I was warned by other members when I posted that I ran over 50 degrees of timing for over 10 passes (bad timing light).. The detonation resulting from too advanced timing is very likely the cause for the damaged bearings...

I'd bet that the cause was detonation and too advanced timing for 10 passes... (slipping adjustment **** on the advance timing light)
