I know this thread has appeared several times before but usually gets sidetracked before the thread gets answered. Question; Vortech supply carb'd blower kit for BBC which will fit Chevelles and trucks etc. Has anyone tried fitting this kit to a Big Block C3. It seems as though the blower casing is very likely to interfere with the driver side upper 'A' arm but could almost fit under hood otherwise. Has any one actually tried it?
A number of people seem to have done it with a small block, but I've never seen one on a big block. Yes the A arm issue. On a small block the blower is slightly rearward and as the A arm angles down at the rear there would be more A arm to hood clearance. Plus the wider head of the BBC couldnt help. My BB 70 has the engine sitting closer to the passenger side so Id have to have the blower on drivers side. Power steering doesn't help either. So far the only option I can see it use the small Procharger C2 unit, its far from ideal but it would fit. It is rated to a max of 725 BHP. Would need to fab up own brackets.
I did some measurements with the dimensions that Vortech supply against my '68 427 with P/Steering. The bracketing as supplied would (if my measurements are correct) sit the blower casing under left of hood between block and 'A' arm opening in inner fender. Std BB hood would seem to clear. I think problems would be clearance to 'A' under suspension deflection, re-siting alternator and possibly P/Steering to passenger side, routeing of 'cool' intake air to blower (it would probably need to come from l/h rear of hood/engine compartment) It would also be difficult to route inter/charge cooler which I think may be essential with our high under hood temperatures. Thanks for replying. I have buddy with a boxed Vortech unit which I may try to borrow and 'offer-up' to Vette.
[QUOTE=Todbo]go for it roscobbc (it's always fun to spend someone elses $)
Its all right for you guys, you are in land of plenty of kit for yer money. I am in UK and we get import duty, overseas shipping costs, import tax, then to add insult to injury we pay 17.5 % tax on the previous total. Can't afford to take too many financial risks here here fellers (unless any of you have a spare Vortech kit you wish to 'donate' for 'research purposes')
