Hopefully this is not a big problem with aftermarket mirrors. I bought a set and put on mine when I got it repainted and they have been on for over a year. No movement yet and I have made a few sustained runs of 80+MPH and they held. But, they are still on the new side.
In fact there is no reliable fix for the problem....and they allways get batter around in parking lots, meaning more wear on the ball joint, frankly they are a **** poor design, a carryover from bygone daze....
the later shark design is much superior, as is the placement further forward to actually have a chance to do their job as intended....another story...I have small bubble stick on mirrors on most of my car/trucks....like trucks use...
I have a 79 & 66 coupe and replaced the mirrors on both & found both after market mirrors to be loose. Here's my fix. I put a drop of superglue on the ball then got in the car and held it in the position I needed to see until the glue dried. Only works if your the only driver.
But you can break the glue bond easily so its not permanent.
the old post said to soak the mirror overnight in mineral spirits to loosen the glass then to drill out the rivits replace w/ screws to tighten up a plate to the ball
