Default trans question

my 71 has a turbo 400 trans and there is a cable from the steering column to the trans, it looks like a shift linkage if the car would be a column shift car. what is this for? new to chevys and I have never seen this, also what controls the downshift on this trans?

Default Foound this on the web...

As similarly as the two transmissions function, there is a significant difference in the way downshifts occur. The Turbo 350 kickdown function is mechanically operated via a cable mounted on the intake manifold near the carburetor. When the throttle linkage reaches a specific point, the cable triggers a mechanical detent valve inside the transmission--allowing it to shift into a lower gear. The Turbo 400 uses an electric switch to trigger a detent solenoid on the valve body to produce the same effect. It seems that either system works equally as well and neither is typically failure prone.

Look for a "kickdown" switch above the gas pedal.

I think you are talking about the column lock feature on the car. When the car is shifted into park or in a 4 speed reverse it moves this arm on the steering column. This allows the key to be turned all the way off and will lock the steering column. I have mine disconnected and as long as the lever is in the up position the key will work fine.
