I have a potential problem with my b/b oil pressure. I just rebuilt the motor. The oil pressure starts out at 50lbs and drops to 10lbs when it warms up. I'm running 5w 40, The block is 30 over crank was ground 10/10 the oil pump is a standard melling.
Could this be a oil pump gone bad or something worse ? I hate to have to pull the motor but sounds like I may have to.
Thanx Mark
10 # at IDLE is probably ok. On the low end of OK, but probably OK for a well used engine, not a new one. Does the pressure rise when the engine is rev'd up? You shouldn't have to use thick oil in a new engine. Sounds like excessive bearing clearance when warm. You may have to bite the bullet and tear into the engine before you have major damage. May be cheaper in the long run. Good luck. Of course, check everything first--oil filter, oil level, oil pumpm etc.

Reason: addition
The pressure does rise when you idle it up,goes to about 25lbs then drops back down. When I assembled the engine I plasti-gauged the whole thing it was well within specs.
Will 30w oil make that big of a difference?
I was thinking about droping the pan and putting in a high pressure oil pump ?
I'm trying to think if there maybe a oil plug left out some where?

glen is right. This is not an oil problem, its a clearance problem. rev the engine to about 2500 hold it and quickly let off the gas, If the pressure goes up before it drops its bearings for sure. Make sure engine is at temp. you don't need a high pressure, or high volumn pump. the factory oiling system is outstanding. this is just my opi. good luck.

your oil is too thin. go with the 20-50 castroil should work great.
you are in florida not alaska lol.
Before you start ripping and tearing on the engine, a 20-50 oil change is cheap and see what you have then....easy first, difficult later, if necessary..
I'm making progress. I did a oil change with 20w-50 and its starts at 45lbs and holds 20lbs all warmed up. I can live with that.
Thanx for the Help

Actually, my engine goes to 40# on high rev and holds at 20# on idle, 'course it's got 100,000 miles on it, so I'd expect that I guess, last oil change I had 20-50 put in, also, but it's rather moot since I need valve guide seals....but, glad ya saw a difference...might get better as the engine breaks in...
