Default electric fan size

looking at going to an electric fan. what would be best for a 500 hp. motor.

I have dual 11" Spal fans from DeWitts (www.dwitts.com) on my 600+ HP 71 and my blown 65. They do a fine job of keeping both engines cool.

i use an aftermarket one also and have around 480 hp. no cooling problems. alot of other dudes use junk yard fans and have great success. someone posted a pic of this recently with two different size fans installed. it was really trick

I tried a single 16" Zirgo (still have it if you want it) but had much MUCH better luck with the twin 11" fans from Spal.

11" Spal fans work great on my big block. Be-Cool's 11" dual fan is the same as DeWitt's; I also use the flex-a-lite controller, available at Jegs or Summit. It provides a soft start function to eliminate the 30 amps or so startup shock from causing other problems to your electrical system. It's fully adjustable and cheaper than Dewitt's solution.

I don't think the "in-rush" current to start the fans has ever been a problem. As long as everything is fused right, relay, and the proper size alternator to support an electric fan system, start up should not be a concern. Never has...

Our dual fans are made by Spal, and we call them Spal fans. They are the same as Be-cool but they call them Be-Cool fans.

A lot of people get mis-lead or confused when looking a fan pricing. We put together a complete "bolt on" dual package with all the items required. That includes the fans, controller, wiring, sender, hardware, and mounting brackets. I feel our mounting brackets look ten times better than the others saddle type.

Many times you will see others selling the dual fans for $280 and that's the fans only.

Here is our new package, which includes the controller, secondard harness, and a universal temp sender with matching plug. Dual fan kit

No disrespect to any of your fine products Mr. DeWitt, and I for one appreciate your efforts in solving our cooling problems. There wasn’t anyone out there focused on the common C3 cooling system deficiencies back in 1998. If you had a big block aluminum radiator available when I originally restored my C3, I would have bought one on the spot.

However, I believe this product might be of interest to others who have upgraded their C3's with modern electronics, and IMSO (in my subjective opinion), the Flex-A-Lite module would be a better solution. I had a simple temperature switch turning on my fans relays, but at idle I noticed a large fluctuation on my Autometer voltmeter when the fans started up. I have EFI and was experiencing an idle speed fluctuation, and since replacing this setup with the Flex-A-Lite module, it keeps the ECU from going through a bunch of compensational calculations to make up for the brief drop in the electrical system voltage and in turn smoothed out the idle. Also, the soft startup feature keeps my Kenwood head unit from acting as if it was power cycled every time the fans start. One more nice feature of this module - it will vary the fans speed according to the temperature of the engine. The hotter the engine the faster the fans spin, nice feature.

I didn't think you were being disrepectful. That's what forums are for, to share thoughts, ideas, and opinions. The flex-a-lite control looks nice but the Spal has some nice features too.

The Spal control is designed to jump start the fans at full speed for a few seconds, then it drops the speed to whatever it takes to cool. When using dual fans, it will sequence the two fans. If the first (primary) fan hits full speed, the control energizes the relay for the second (slave) fan, then starts ramping up the primary fan as required.

The control has an electrical connection for a sender that matches many two prong gauge sending units. You can install a separate sender for feedback or you can simply use the existing factory one you already have since the unit reads ohms for feedback.

The Spal control also has a wire for the AC clutch. When the AC clutch is turned on, it overrides the speed control and runs the fans at full.

Simple high/low programable buttons with LED monitoring lights.

Yes, the Spal control does cost more, but I think it's worth .01 more. We sell the Spal control for $80 and the F-A-L is 79.99 at jegs.Jegs price

This unit will control both fans, I understood you needed an additional relay to control 2 fans, pushing the cost difference wider.

You do need an additional relay/harness to run two fans, that is true. I didn't see that the f-a-l could control two fans, does it? Even if it does, I still like the idea of individual fuses and relays. If you have a fuse big enough for two fans, then it isn't going to protect one fan from buring up.
