Default Tire Help

I know this has been addressed in serveral other posts (I've looked through them), but I'm still confused as to my issue and thought someone might have some advice.

On my 68 Corvette, I had put on a set of American Racing 17X8 TorqThrustII Rims with 235/55/17 Tires. Although I'm very happy with the rims, the back tires don't have nearly enough traction. I want to buy a pair of 17X9.5 rims, but my question is will they fit stock, and what tire size can/should I run for that tire. I'm not interested in fender flares etc just want most I can get with fit. Also any advice on the rim itself (backspacing etc...) would be great.

I really appreciate the help!

Not sure about the 17x8 TTII's but on a 15x8 which i believe is stock you can fit a 255/60/15 which is a lot bigger tire then your 235/55/17
some guys are running 275/55/15's on the rear VERY big tire.
Hope it helps.

275/50/15 here on a 10" convo pro, not sure of the back spacing (4-3/4 I think). There is a little more room there than what you would think.
