Default Question About Edelbrock Quadrajet Carb

Hi,

I have a '75 with the Edelbrock aftermarket Quadrajet. Unlike on the original quadrajets, the idle mixture screws on the front of the unit do not have slots in them and so I can't adjust them with a regular flat head screwdriver. Instead, it has some type of male style tab that looks like it requires some type of specific female adjustment tool. Does anyone know where I can get one and what tool to ask for? I've tried long and slim needle nose pliers but I still can't grab the tips. Thank you!

you can buy these in the tool section at some auto parts stores, mine was made by LISLE, I believe. it has a screwdriver-like handle with a 12 inch or so spring rod hooked to it, and comes with 4 fittings or adapters. it makes adjusting the mix screws a breeze and keeps hands away from the belts, etc.

Go to AutoZone or one of those places and get a carb. adjusting tool from their tool section. It's has a long flexible shaft w/ 4 or 5 different bits in it. I believe it should be the "D" or ovate shaped bit.

Gary beat me to it.

what # carb do you have? pics? I have a 1901 and I don't think it has the same type of adjusters. I thought I just used a regular screwdriver t oadjust the idle mix. I did have to buy torx tools to take out all the screws tho.

You can either use a regular screwdiver or a "bit" to adjust the Idle screw. The air/fuel ones have the odd shape screw heads.

Thanks a lot...I pass by an Autozone on the way to work so I'll look for one. PRNDL, my model number is either a 1903 or 4, but from the pictures it looks like the 1901 does have screwdriver slots. I'm not sure why they make them differently. Thanks again!

you can also use a allen head socket or put a piece of a allen wrench into a socket and grind a groove in the middle of the tip. this will slide over the male adjustment post

I'm running an edelbrock quad #1903 on my 79, and used the afore-mentioned Lisle brand tool on it.

I have the 1903 too and the tool.

The big question is how to properly adjust idle mixture.

I have read the directions and they don't really make sense--it says to keep turning the screws out until the rpm's don't increase any more.

What?! 10 turns or so?

If anybody can clear this up it'd make my day.

same as stock quad 795 cfm, and gas mileage is not something I look at, but if you must know gas, mileage is 10-12 mpg, 15 on the highway, best i ever got was 17mph. I put my right foot in this car a lot.
