How much clearance is there between the stock hood and the top of the carb/air filter assembly on an '81? I have the motor out of mine now and I need to find out if the new motor will fit. Guess I should have checked while it was in the car.
Anybody? The one I am looking as is from Sallee Chevrolet..their version of the 350 HO deluxe. I called them and they said it is about 1/2 to 3/4 inches higher than stock. So how much room do I have to play with? THANKS!
A good way to measure the clearance is to place a small ball of clay (the type that children play with) on top of the air cleaner and close the hood. Then measure the thickness of the compressed clay.
Yeah, I was thinking I could just use a dropped base cleaner. But before I went ahead and ordered the motor, I wanted to verify how much room I have to work with.

It seems there's alot of questions about this subject. I have a 383 with a Eld. Rpm Air Gap and Holley in a 82. That's probably about as high as you'll get without going to a single plane manifold. It fits with a drop down air cleaner with 3" filter. I also have a K&N filtered top. Not much room as you can imagine, but it's all I need. My 82 had some extra meat under the hood for fresh air, I had to Dremil away. You shouldn't even have that problem. Watch your stud height and you'll probably have to use a regular nut on it instead of a pretty wing nut. If you do a search...you can find alot. Some I've wrote. Good luck! Larry
You'll be fine. I have a victor under the stock hood(took a little more than a drop base). I recomend getting a drop base anyways becuase they will flow better than the restrictive stock air cleaner assembly.
