I'm going to change my water pump this weekend and when I called the local parts house they suggested a High output water pump. It's about twice the price of a "normal" one. The guys said it flows alot more water anyone use one of these?
Are they for real and do they help with the car running cooler?
I'm running an el-cheapo Autozone on my 79 and temps usually run ~185*F without air. So personaly, I don't see any need to spend extra for more water flow.
A good way to mess up a good thing is to substitute high dollar aftermarket junk for an original tryed and true working cooling system. My advice or opinion, which I think your looking for. Is to keep it simple and original. GM has it right with nearly any amount of HP.
If you are still getting above normal temps after replacing your water pump, start looking a these:
1) thermostat - could be sticking. get a 180* one. don't go lower. cheap part
2) radiator hoses - could be collapsing.
3) radiator needs flushed - probably a good idea anyway if it has been a while
4) radiator needs blown clear - be careful to not use too much air since the stock copper can be very thin on old rad's.
5) fan clutch - might not be engaging at higher temps.
6) timing - too much timing WILL increase engine temps.
i use the edelbrock high flow. it just seemed like a good idea when building my engine. you can do the same thing by pop riviting a flat disc to your impeller blades.
I've got the Edelbrock pump, not really impressed. It does what they say it will do, it pumps more water. Not really a good thing for mine. The temp. raised about 10 degrees. I think because the water doesn't get as much time in the radiator to cool. It still looks cool though!

Jegs makes a Vette specific SB cast iron hight flow water pump that bolts right up and uses all the stock pullies/accesories etc. Not as pretty as polished or chrome...but it's under $90.
I put one on my 77 when I built the motor and it fit & performed perfectly.

This quote is exactly what happens. And also as to HP, stock water pumps will handle as much HP as you can make and still allow a mechanical pump on the engine. Just think L88`s. 550+HP and all stock components.
I would use an Airtex or Edelbrock pump on my Vette if it is around 400HP or better and revs over 6,000 RPM with any frequency.
When I redid my 70' LT1 I went to a high volumn Aluminum Pump, Airtex I believe, it made a real differense. The engine is Roller Cammed and regulary turns 7200. I was blowing the small bearing pumps up regularely. The engine puts out > 425hp and never goes above 180deg, no matter how many Fords it eats.

not true. how can more water flow make your thermostat react differently? it controls how long the water stays in the rad to be cooled. as for the extra 10 deg. you probably didnt purge the system enough and/or correctlly to remove all the air. common problem with a vette because our rad caps are NOT the highest point in our cooling systems. the thermostat housing is. drill two tiny holes on the outer ring of your thermostat and i bet you get back your 10 deg.
