Default 383 stroker owners, Please chime in

In the process of building a new motor, Curious to know some of your setups, using a solid lift non roller cam.

Any feedback would be appreciated
Thanks in advance.

I used a Crane 270H cam, and Crane 1.6 roller rockers. Block is .060 overbore, high-tin 4 bolt main (Circa early '70s) stuffed with an all forged bottom end items: 10:1 pistons on Scat H Beam rods and crank.

Cam is mild enough to pass emission easily but runs outta fuel with the performer manifold at just shy of 5500RPM. I don't race it, so with the current intake system I shift at 5K when I want to waste some fuel .

383, Cast Eagle crank-internal balanced, forged Eagle rods, Forged SRP pistons, Comp XR288 (hydraulic roller) with 1.6RR-.555/.576 lift, AFR 195s, Port matched Victor Jr., Redlines 6000rpm, and puts out an honest 500hp.

My first 383 had a XE284 (flat tappet) cam and KB pistons. Pulled very strong 2500-6000rpms. But was very rough at idle with 240/246 duration..i hated driving it on the street..especially with lots of stop lights.

you got the same crank i do,,cast eagle 383 stroker crank.. i thought you ment a forged crank ,, i wanted that ,,and the builder talked me outta it.. thats what i ment cuz i think it was $900 for a forged crank 500 ponies thats great...i knew i wasnt gonna get it up there that much ,,without really pourin more in heads...450 a head was enough for me now i didnt want to spend 10 grand on this build

To be honest I'd have look in the VEtte file to figure that out. I wrote out a fat check for the whole lot...but then didn't have enough $$ left to get good heads for it after putting the bottom end together. I put SS valves into chev cast iron heads, ported and polished 'em and have been driving it for three years. I figure the bottom end is more than beefy enough for me to squeeze more HP out of it in the future with Edlebrock heads when I'm ready.

When I built my 383 I first went with a flat tappet cam. Latter change to a hyd. roller. I like the roller cam. Lots of money but its better to do it now than latter. I didn't mind the prize of the cam but the retro fit lifters really bothered me. Larry

I just got back from the machine shop. A 383 build up that will run at 7000 rpm all day. Forged 4340 Eagle crank Scat or Eagle H beam rods and forged srp pistons. I asked about the cam and I like the solid lifters and he said the cam I have now a 294S Comp Cams is good but he might even go bigger. He was not to thrilled with the heavy hyd. rollers if the motor is going to see over 6000 rpm. Plus I would need new roller lifters pushrods rocker arms and springs. I am going to use my existing AFR heads. For the few extra ponies he said the solid cam will more than be enough for 500+ HP. The short block is not going to be cheap but it will take anything I throw at it including nitrous.
