Default What a Bummer!

I got home tonight ready to install a new rag joint, then install the brake booster and master cylinder. I got my new rag joint out and started attaching it to the part that attaches to the column. The small bolt torqued down just fine but the larger bolt on the other side just kept on going. I pulled it apart and found that the hole thru the fiber where the small bolt goes thru has a metal sleeve that allows the bolt and nut to torque tight; the other side did not have the sleeve in the hole or a blot with a shank, so it just kept compressing the fiber instead of torquing tight the way it should. A wasted night and another trip to swap the part. This is one area that has to be absolutely correct for safety!

I will take it back tomorrow and get another one from the local chevy dealer. I bought this one from Volunteer Vettes and they usually have quality parts. But with any vender, they are only as good as their supplier. I will give them the opportunity to check their stock to see if it was an oversight on their vendor's part. If not, it is off to the chevy dealer and the correct part. This will cost me two nights on my project as I will be busy tomorrow night and will not get to work on it until friday evening. This just illustrates the fact that we need to check everything we do and the parts we buy before we use them. Lives are at stake as a result of our work and modifications. It is a hobby we must take seriously.
