Default which pulley groove

I`ve been having trouble with alternater brackets on my 75. Broke 2 upper, they were aftermarket chrome, I put the correct one on. Now my lower bracket snapped. The belt is in the pulley closest to the engine. The power steering belt is in front. Is this correct. Any reason I would be having this much trouble or is it just bad luck?

Just came in from the shop and the alt belt is the closet to the block then the a/c and the p/s is on the outside this is on an 80. I just bought a really nice alt bracket from Summit Racing that you might want to check out.
It is the adjustable type that uses a single rod to adjust the tension. Very heavy duty and comes in polished or chrome. My chrome one was $69.

sounds like REALLY bad luck. I can't see how those should break before the belt would.
