The speedo on the 76 has been getting a little lazy lately. Occasionally, over the last several months it would travely smoothly from 0 to 30 mph and then hang around for a bit although the car would be traveling more like 60, then abruptly jump to the accurate speed.
Last night, I went to get some gas and the speedo never left 0 on the way to the station. After fueling and heading for home, it had climbed to 10 mph, although my speed was more than 40 mph. By the time I got home, it had climed to about 30 mph.
Any ideas? Rebuild? Cleaning? Replacement? Cable? or do I have a dead beat speedo?
The first thing I would do is to remove the inner cable to inspect it for any damage. If no damage lube with white litheum grease. You might also want to check the driven gear for any damage. My '81 speedometer quit working and it was the driven gear. I bought a new 19 tooth natural and replaced the worn one. The one I removed looked fine until very close inspection revealed that there was a slight taper on one section of the gear. The gears are pretty cheap and you will probably need to pull the gear to make sure you get the correct one. Hope that helps.

Lube the cable first. Quick and easy fix. I don't use grease since it will cake if it gets too hot. NAPA has some powdered graphite cable lube that works well.
My speedometer does some strange things especially now that its cold. When I start up it does nothing, then after a while it goes up to 60-70 mph and stays there even when I stop. After I have driven for a while and the car is good and warm, the speedometer seems to work well.
I am guessing that the inner cable needs cleaning. But I do not know how to do it. Please help.
Also I have a 77 with an automatic and no cruise control. Do I have a 1 piece cable or an upper and lower? How do I figure it out. I will probably figure this out when I know how to clean I lube it.
