Default 78 trans am VS 76 vette

i have a 76 vette auto with an L82 only mods are k&N, headers and the original tips welded on to flowmasters. My friend have an all original 6.6 smokey and the bandit trans am,auto as well and he smokes the pants off of me all the time. The bad thing is is that he talks so much trash about my vette. Its time for me to start modding i have 3000 dollars to spend and i am interested in what you all think the best way to spend it to be able to our run him.

You can start with cam, intake, long tube headers, 750 carb
and you'll take him. all for under $1200.00

Or buy a GM long block, and go from there.

An Edelbrock Performer RPM package or equiv will get you about 400hp at the flywheel. If he is as stock as you say, you will crush him like a bug.

the power is in the heads; either use yours with extensive machine work to make them flow, or buy a set of aluminum heads; i would go with a set of AFR heads;

add to that a MATHCED cam, headers, intake, and carb and the Bandit is done for.

should be able to do that for 3K if you do the work yourself. if you cant afford AFR heads, the l98 heads produce good horse power on the zz4s and should support 400 horsepower out of the box.

Parked in my garage next to my Vette is my kids 78 Trans Am 6.6 litre. Take this guys advice and I assure you the trash talking bandit will be silenced. You actually don't have that far to go. If I recall, the Olds 403 in the 78 TA was spec'd at around 185 hp, and the Pontiac 400 motor spec'd at around 205 or so but it has a lot more torque. Either way, even the TAs were victims of the governments smog directives and if he's still running stock, he's fast but very, very easily beatable with these mod's to your platform.

Default Pontiac tourque

The same mods head porting, cam, ect. to the Pontiac 400 it will again be kicking the Corvettes pants. The Pontiac tourque is hard to beat on the street. I'm a Pontiac guy to happens to be restoring a 68 Vette which I really like. But my GTO will run circles around the vette.

Agreed, if the Bandit decides to modify his original car. Then it becomes one-upsmanship and the guy with the most money will win.

true. the bandit can mod his 6.6; you can get a 383; then he can upgrade to a 455; then you can do a 502;

this game dont ever have to end; you can end up with a nitromethane blown big block as the end game, or better yet, strap some JATO units to the back of your vette.

thats part of the fun!

dont tell him you are going to mod.

Just tell him your car broke and it will be down for a bit. Then show up with all your mods.

Its a game, treat it like one.

I could have my friend in his Honda civic show up and make him look like a fool if you really want? THat always humbles people.

I'm a vette guy through and through, but if each guy spends an equal amt on mods, my $$$ is on the Pontiac....

I vote for a stroker kit, true duals, cam, and better heads. Keep it stock looking under the hood and he will be left scratching his head wondering what happened.

1. Send your carb to Lars for magic hammer tuning.
2. Recurve your distributor and set the timing according to Lars' paper.
3. True dual exhaust. Can't make power if the engine can't breath.
4. Good intake. Must have the above before this helps.
5. Good heads. Must have both of the above before this helps.
6. A cam that matches the heads and delievers power in the street band.
7. Can tinker with things like thinner gaskets and whatnot to change compression ratio.
8. Headers.
9. Stroke your L82 to a 406 mighty mouse.

Default I have had both!

I owned a 78 TA with the 400 pontiac. I rebuilt the car, mostly stock with OK head work, used GTO heads and crank and a big cam. With a 4 spd and 3.42's it would smoke my Dad's '77 vette so bad. In fact it smoked most cars at the time. Later, years later I bought my 71 LS-5 thinking, "yeah BBC". However the somewhat stock 454, even with 3:55's would be no match for the old TA. Those cars are pretty tough if you put a little effort into the engine. Oh and they are easy to work on... no clearance issues like on a BB vette.

Still a vette's a 2 seater like a real sports car should be
