While online diagnosis without ever seeing the car is difficult, the first two things that come to my mind are:
1) You could have either wheel bearing that's totally shot (and the wheel could come off).
2) The frame where the lower control arm connects to the frame could be cracking (which also could eventually completely give way, and end up with catastrophic carnage).
If either is true, I certainly wouldn't recommend driving the car much in that condition.

also check...
This problem could aslo be attributed to worn ball joints. but either way this car should'nt be driven untill you get it on a lift and check it out....
How much travel are you talking about when the wheel moves/
Could be bad ball joints, upper control arm shaft or bushings, shims missing (fell out) It would not be advisable to drive it too much before you check it out, could be a bad experience for ya, Peace,,, Moosie

Weil Grusse,
Also look at the ball joints, do this by shaking the spindle while still assembled, you are loking for any side to side or front to rear movement. also examine th cross shaft on the upper control arm for wear on the bushings, and if you can determine where the shims came from remeber that fopr later ( do this by looking at the gap between the cross shatf and the frame. as far at the lower shaft goes, this mounts directly to the frame and should be solid and in place even if the busings are worn.
Soo. wo bist du im Deutchland. Ich habe gewhonst im Bad Kissengen, und auch kreis Framkfurt am mein.
I am in Wiesbaden Germany and will be sure to look at those items I hope and pray that there is nothing serious I am going to replace the bushins, spindle, wheel bearing by the end of january!
ball joints, bearings, cracked control arms or frame.. it could be any of those like the others said..i know it's prolly a given, but is the wheel on and torqued down tight? whatever you do, DONT DRIVE ANY FURTHER THAN ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY UNTIL YOU FIGURE IT OUT!
