My electrical debug saga on my '77 continues. Thanks again to everyone that helped me through the wire harness issues over the weekend. I think I have that sorted out now.
Today's issue is with the turn signal operation. I replaced both the direction flasher and the hazard flasher in order to get any operation out of the blinkers at all. Now I can get the hazards to flash when the button on the column is pushed. I can also get the turn signals to flash with the headlights OFF. However, when I turn the headlights on, the left turn signal indicator on the speedometer lights up, not as strongly as when the turn signal is on, but it lights up. The exterior lights are fine and seem to be as bright as you'd expect. When I try the turn signal with the exterior lights on, the left signal flashes but slowly and the right signal will flash exactly once and only once. As another note, I have replaced all of the exterior light bulbs with new ones and all illuminate just fine.

It could also be caused by a lamp inserted backwards ...sounds funny, but I've seen the two-way bulbs inserted backwards cause this "feature". Worth a check, anyway (parking turns on blinker, so not too far fetched).
Where are the harness ground points on a '77? That could make sense. I'm also thinking a ground point issue at one of the lamps on the exterior as well.

Brian.
Which lamp do you think? I didn't realize that they could be put in backwards. I though they went in either direction with the plug-in and twist type that I have.

It's hard to say, but it should be a parking/blinker light on the side that is affected. They are keyed -- in that one of the "pegs" is lower on the bulb base than the other -- so they should only go in one way, but as they age, you can get them in backwards with not too much force.
just a thought but it might be low voltage from a bad battery that is causing your problems. Does the same thing happen when the car is running or on a charger?
